Sranan  (2014)

Thanks to the initiative of Nadine Claes, a Belgian lady whose daughter had just returned from a trip to Suriname, I was put in contact with Arlette Codfried, a teacher in Paramaribo. She put just as much time as enthusiasm into achieving this translation.

At the time of proof reading I found out that the grammar of this essentially spoken language did not meet unanimity. Fortunately local publisher Mr Rappa made use of his notability and interpersonal skills to get everyone to agree. However, this did not prevent the remedial work from taking many months…

Besides a few dozen copies which were shipped to Europe, all the books were locally distributed free of charge to public schools. Pictured below : translator Arlette Codfried (in red) accompanied by Suriname's First Lady, Ingrid Bouterse.
